About Your Meter
Your meter is an instrument that records the amount of energy that enters your home. The meter measures the gas or electricity flowing through it and then records this flow of gas or electricity in the numbers on its dials or digital screen. A message appears in the Service Summary Notes section of your bill indicating the date of your next scheduled meter reading.
Regular Meter Readings are Important
Regular meter readings help to ensure that you're billed only for the actual amount of gas you've used, and that your equipment is working properly. We read your meter at approximately the same time every month except in unusual circumstances like severe weather, bad road conditions, locked access, or dogs. If we can't get access to your meter, we calculate your bill based on the history of gas usage at your service address, average temperatures for the billing period, and the current cost of gas.
Submitting an Actual Reading
The most recent and previous reading dates appear in the Service Summary section(s) of your bill. If your bill has been estimated, and you would like to submit your own meter reading, you can report your meter reading online by logging into your account. Or, to submit your reading by phone, call our automated phone system NIPSCO DirectLink at 1-800-464-7764 and select option 1 after the greeting, then option 4, then option 1 to enter a meter reading. A message appears in the Service Summary Notes section of your bill indicating the date of your next scheduled meter reading.
Hard to Access Meters
If you have a meter that we've not been able to read for several months, or if you have a remote index, we have a shared responsibility to make sure we obtain an actual meter reading as soon as possible. Please call us to make arrangements for access. Also, the Gas/Electric Use History chart(s) on your bill identifies the number of estimated readings during the previous months, shown as white bars on the graph.
Call Customer Service at 1-800-4NIPSCO (or 1-800-464-7726) 24 hours a day to make arrangements for our meter reader to gain access to your meter. The following options are available to prevent this situation from occurring in the future:
- Make sure an adult is home on the scheduled meter reading date to provide access to the meter.
- Provide us with a key for secure access to read the meter.
If you have an inside meter and would like to avoid an estimated bill, you can provide a meter reading online or by calling our automated system. We are required to obtain a reading and visually inspect the meter once every 12 months.
Estimated Meter Reads
If we're unable to read your meter, we accurately estimate your reading based on the history of usage at the service address and normal temperatures for the billing period. We verify the reading the next time we read the meter to make sure you pay only for the energy you’ve used.
Meter Readings and Your Bill
Look for the Service Summary section(s) on your NIPSCO bill. Here you will see how much energy you used during the billing period for which you are being charged. Your bill shows the amount of energy used by subtracting the previous reading from the most recent reading. Your bill also provides other useful information related to your meter readings that can help you manage your energy use and cost:
- The number of days in the billing cycle
- Whether the reading was an actual reading our meter reader obtained, provided by you, or estimated based on the history of usage at your service address for the same period last year and current weather conditions
- Gas/Electric Use History chart(s) that allows you to compare usage for this month with last month and the same month last year, or for as long as you have lived at your current address if less than 13 months
- Comparisons of average daily temperature and usage for the current month, last month, and the same month last year
