Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the Green Power Rate pilot program?
NIPSCO’s Green Power Rate pilot program is a voluntary program that allows customers to designate a portion or all of their monthly electric usage to be attributable to power generated by renewable energy sources, such as wind power.
2. Who is eligible to participate and what are the designation levels?
All electric customers, including residential, commercial and industrial customers, are eligible to participate.
Residential electric customers can designate 25, 50 or 100 percent of their monthly electric usage. In addition to those options, commercial and industrial customers have the option to designate five or 10 percent of their usage.
3. How much does it cost to participate?
Customers electing to participate will pay a monthly premium in addition to NIPSCO’s standard, regulated electric rate. The added costs are passed directly through to customers, with no mark up or financial return for NIPSCO.
NIPSCO’s proposed green power rate is $0.002012 per kilowatt-hour (“kWh”). This means, for example, that customers choosing the 100 percent option and using 1,000 kWh per month would pay $2.01 in addition to their typical monthly electric bill. You may change your participation level or cancel at any time at any time at no added cost. Non-participating customers are not responsible for additional charges associated with making this program available.
The rate for Green Power is subject to change depending upon the source of renewable energy certificates and number of participants in the program and can be adjusted twice each year through filings with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). Visit NIPSCO.com/GreenPower for the most up-to-date rate information.
4. How can customers sign up for the program?
You can sign up by logging on to your account at NIPSCO.com or by calling (800) 4NIPSCO (464-7726).
5. Will there be any changes or interruptions to my electric service if I enroll in the program?
Power quality and reliability will not be impacted by participating in the program.
6. Can I change my designation or cancel my participation?
You may change your participation level or cancel at any time at no cost by logging on to your account at NIPSCO.com or by calling (800) 4NIPSCO (464-7726).
7. How soon after I sign up will the rate appear on my bill? Will it be prorated if I sign up mid-month?
The Green Power rate premium will appear on your next bill after enrollment. Because NIPSCO collects electric usage readings on a monthly basis, the premium will be applied to the full month's usage.
8. How can customers be sure the power they’re designating comes directly from renewable energy resources?
Under the proposal, NIPSCO will purchase a sufficient amount of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) necessary to cover all green power designated by its electing customers. RECs are the environmental attributes associated with electricity that is generated from renewable sources.
A unique serial number is assigned to each REC and an independent tracking system ensures that the REC is only used once.
These RECs are certified through Green-e® Energy, a recognized national organization that ensures RECs are created from the proper sources and are properly claimed.
9. Where does the purchased power come from?
The green power purchased through this program will come from Midwestern resources.
10. Do customers who do not participate in the program have to pay?
No. Non-participating customers are not responsible for additional charges associated with making this program available.
11. What is Green-e Energy?
Green-e® Energy is the nation’s leading renewable energy certification and verification program, with nearly 300 participating vendors. Green-e® Energy provides independent, third-party certification to ensure that certified renewable energy meets strict environmental and consumer protection standards.

12. How does the Green Power Program benefit the environment?
The NIPSCO Green Power Program helps encourage the development of renewable energy by providing the generator (for example: a wind farm) an additional source of revenue.
13. Why is NIPSCO offering this program?
This pilot program addresses interest in providing additional customer options like the green options already provided by NIPSCO. It is a simple alternative for those customers who aren’t, for whatever reason, able to purchase and install their own solar panels or wind turbines, but still want to make a positive environmental impact.
In addition to supporting the state’s goals to promote renewable and homegrown energy, the Green Power Program is in line with NIPSCO’s mission to invest in clean, modern and affordable energy solutions that support Indiana’s long-term economic growth.
