Automated Meter Reading (AMR)
Technology improves customer service, efficiency and safety
In 2013, we began upgrading the way we read electric and natural gas meters through the installation of an Automated Meter Reading System (AMR).
AMR meters make it possible for us to gather your monthly meter readings from a receiver mounted in a NIPSCO vehicle instead of entering your property. This technology, which has been adopted by many utilities across the country, differs from “smart meters,” which transmit information through a wireless communication network.
- AMR meters will help eliminate estimated meter readings by gathering your monthly reading through a receiver mounted in a NIPSCO vehicle that can read several households and businesses at once.
- Because monthly meter readings can be collected without needing to physically read each meter in person, customers enjoy greater privacy and convenience.
- The new AMR system will improve workplace safety for our meter readers by removing many of the hazards they face (severe weather, locked gates, tripping hazards and animal interference).
About the Installations
Installations will be completed by Tru-Check, a NIPSCO subcontractor. The technicians will carry photo identification, wear uniforms and drive marked vehicles. NIPSCO Electric Customers may notice a brief service interruption during the installation. The installation process will be done at no charge to the customer and takes about 20 minutes or less. In most cases, the process does not require the technician to enter the home or business. However, our technicians will request access if your meter is located inside.
You will receive advanced notification of the meter change. If you are not at home during the meter installation, the technician will leave a door hanger indicating that your AMR meter has been installed or detailing next steps for arranging an installation appointment if we were unable to access your meter.
Attention Pet Owners:
To help ensure the safety of our technicians, please keep pets indoors during the exchange. A technician will not enter a yard with an unrestrained pet. If you are not able to keep your pet indoors, please call 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726) to schedule an appointment to have your meter upgraded.
Important: Renewable Energy Generation
If your home or business has a renewable generator, such as wind or solar, and you have not entered into an Interconnection Agreement with NIPSCO's Net Metering/Feed-in Tariff Program, please contact us immediately at 1-800-464-7726 or email email@example.com.
