Good for customers
Savings that start soon - and continue
By transitioning to lower-cost, cleaner energy sources, including wind and solar, and selling the renewable energy credits associated with that generation, we can generate more than $4 billion in cost savings. And our customers can start seeing those savings as soon as 2023.
A large portion of those savings come from no longer needing to purchase large amounts of coal: Today, NIPSCO spends about $186 million annually on the fuel alone to run our remaining coal units. That cost goes away when we retire our coal fleet – which is the equivalent of $105 less per year, per average household.

Environmental benefits
Our plan will reduce carbon emissions by more than 90% by 2028, compared to a 2005 baseline, by retiring all of our coal-fired generation. We are investing in renewable energy generation,* and NIPSCO customers will receive electric energy through a mix of resource fuels which are purchased via the MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator) power grid.
Economic benefits
Lower-cost energy makes Northern Indiana more attractive to employers and residents alike. And significant investments in renewable energy generation create opportunities for new jobs in a growing field.
Your Energy, Your Future
We’re working toward a brighter future for Northern Indiana by focusing on the long-term strength of our local economy; delivering the best cost, most balanced and reliable energy; and reducing emissions to improve our environment.
