    2016 was a solid year for Northern Indiana. Unemployment is at a 15-year low, more Hoosiers are working than ever before, tourism spending reached record levels ($11.5 billion in 2015) and some Hoosier-specific manufacturing is doing quite well too (the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association reports RV shipments are at their highest in 40 years with 431,000 units sold).

  • Valparaiso Selects Fiber Installer

    Hot on the heels of being named by Google as Indiana’s “eCity” for 2015, Valparaiso, Indiana is one step closer to installing municipal fiber network infrastructure. In February the Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission selected Rohl Networks, a Florida company, to install the actual fiber network. Work could be completed as early as the end of 2016.

  • Confirmed: Port of Indiana – Burns Harbor Has Near-Record Year

    Previously, ED Impact reported that Port Director Rick Heimann said 2015 appeared to be another great year for the northern Indiana port, but that final year-end totals were not yet analyzed. In February, the Port of Indiana - Burns Harbor location was able to finally confirm that 2015 saw the second-highest level of cargo tonnage in over two decades, with 2014 as the only year to see more.

  • IN-Person Report: Economic Development Course

    The Indiana Economic Development Course, organized and operated by Ball State University’s Building Better Communities group, is a one-week, intensive training course. Attendees include mayors, county commissioners, community developers, business representatives and many others from across the state (and a few from outside of Indiana as well). Over five days, approximately 80 attendees spend 10 to 11 hours a day learning, hearing from experts and professionals and building connections across communities and across the state.

Just speak with him for a few minutes and he will rave on and on about northern Indiana’s people, towns, and its potential. I’ve never heard him speak a negative word about anyone or anyplace and always walk tall with a smile on his face.
