Tours "Cap" off 10 years of C.A.P. Engagement

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Stephanie Vandiver, one of NIPSCO’s public affairs managers, welcomed members of the Wabash Valley CAP and guests from the White County Economic Development board of directors to the site, and informed them that NIPSCO still had some major projects underway over the summer, including upgrades to the Norway Dam. These upgrades, Vandiver explained, are primarily intended to improve reliability and reduce emissions. NIPSCO takes environmental protection seriously; during a recent project that would have closed off parts of Lake Shafer to the public, the utility company went out of its way to keep the lake open for everyone to enjoy.

Rick Rakos, operations manager for NIPSCO’s hydroelectric dam system, explained the history and current status of the facilities. NIPSCO maintains two hydroelectric plants: the Norway Dam in Monticello and the Oakdale Dam ten miles south of Monticello.

The Norway Dam was built in 1922 to supply electricity to NIPSCO customers. It is based at Lake Shafer and has four units and generates seven megawatts of power, which is enough to supply roughly 4,000 homes. The Oakdale Dam is at Lake Freeman, generates nine megawatts of power and is controlled from the Norway Dam site.

The group toured the Norway Dam and watched the generating units operating. From a bridge they were also able to see one of the gates opening, sending thousands of gallons of water through a twelve-inch opening.

Along with power generation these dams control the lake levels. In 2008, that area suffered what is considered a “hundred year flood,” and in the aftermath the U.S.  Army Corps of Engineers, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and NIPSCO worked together to develop a plan to prepare for this should it ever happen again.  Right now, NIPSCO is in the process of carrying out that plan, reinforcing the Norway Dam and adding five flood gates to ensure reliability and safety should an even worse flood occur.
