Familiar Faces in New Places

Friday, April 10, 2015

Fitzer had worked at NIPSCO for 40 years before taking on the director’s role as an interim position. He became permanent director and has served in that role for the last three years. “It was an exciting time in Portage,” Fitzer says about when he transitioned from interim to permanent director. “I was like a kid in a candy store. I absolutely loved it.” Fitzer says PEDCO focused on assets and marketed the city as the home of the Port of Indiana and as a transportation hub.

Taking over as executive director at PEDCO is Lou Gagliardi, who previously ran a cellular phone business that spanned 33 stores in five states, though he has been retired from that for a year. Gagliardi says he will continue Fitzer’s efforts, adding that as vacant land becomes scarcer, business retention and expansion will become an increasingly important aspect of his approach to economic development.
