Alcoa Opens Aerospace Plant in La Porte

Thursday, December 10, 2015

The 320,000 sq. ft. facility produces advanced jet engine parts. Approximately a year ago, the company announced it was investing $100 million into the operation. Now the facility is open and operating, producing single-piece structural parts nearly 60 percent larger than parts previously produced at that location before the upgrades to the facility.

“Every tool that we could muster across the broad scope of Alcoa’s manufacturing capability around the world has been incorporated into this plant,” said Alcoa Power and Propulsion President Mike Pepper. This includes advanced robotics, IT and data collecting systems. The facility is expected to create nearly 330 jobs by 2019.

The company already has some major orders to fill. Pratt & Whitney offered a $1.1 billion, 10-year contract for structural components for a number of engine types, and other companies are seeking supply partnerships as well.

According to Pepper, the new plant gives Alcoa a much stronger and broader reach into the aerospace industry and allows them to meet the demand to produce parts for some of the best-selling jet engines on the market.
