The Regional Development Company: Invested in Indiana

Thursday, December 10, 2015

Bert Cook, executive director of the Greater La Porte Economic Development Corporation, said the RDC, through its 504 small business loan program and capital improvement revolving loan fund program, has helped develop and expand nearly 30 businesses in his coverage area.

“In most areas they are able to lend and work well with local lenders,” he said, “so we get a huge bang for our buck.”

Rex Richards, president and CEO of the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, said the RDC was one of the most important lending organizations in his area with its ability to provide expansion financing for firms and small businesses; andHeather Ennis, president and CEO of the Northwest Indiana Forum, said it has helped grow the local economy by assisting borrowers through the small business loan process with local banks.

According to its website, the RDC has funded more than 400 loans, totaling some $485 million, and created or retained more than 4,500 jobs in Indiana alone. It has also done work in the Chicago area.

Erica Dombey, president and executive director of the RDC, said her organization, which is accredited with the administration of several federal loans, has assisted in projects ranging in cost from $15,000 to $12 million, and included such efforts as assisted living facilities, doctors’ offices and manufacturing plants.

“All the deals that we finance do a couple things,” Dombey said. “They create jobs, a lot of jobs… and, in conjunction with banks, we have helped put half a billion dollars back into the region. We are a catalyst for economic development by providing businesses access to capital.”
