Powering Life Through Youtube

In January, NIPSCO once again expanded its efforts to communicate with its customers by launching its own Youtube channel.

ED Impact spoke with Kathleen Szot, Senior Manager of Customer Communications & Marketing at NIPSCO, about the new way the utility is engaging the people it serves. "We set up our Facebook a few years ago and established an official twitter account the next year," Szot said. The new Youtube channel is a further effort to connect with customers where they are most active. Video as a storytelling medium offers advantages that the others don't: "Especially in an industry with such technical topics, video is extremely useful to explain what the company is doing and what sorts of programs are being offered."

Already the channel has videos covering a variety of topics: an animated one explains theNatural Gas Pipeline Modernization Plan, another is an overview of a corporate citizenship project at NIPSCO called Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, and another highlights the philanthropy efforts of NIPSCO employees with their Holiday Givebackprogram. Although aimed at a general audience of its customers, some of the videos may still be useful in the context of economic development since they easily explain what NIPSCO is doing.

More videos are to come, and they are open to content ideas from economic developers so if you think of a video idea that would be useful, email and we'll pass it along to the proper people.
