Best for Business: Indiana is Top 5

Friday, June 17, 2016

Now ranked top in the Midwest and fifth out of the 50 states overall, Indiana moved up one spot from where it was ranked last year.

Indiana Governor Mike Pence said in a release that, “This ranking confirms what we in the Hoosier state already know to be true – that Indiana holds the line on spending, maintains strong reserves and keeps the cost of doing business affordable through record tax cuts.”

The ranking was based on measurements of several factors including tax and regulations, work force quality and living environment (which includes cost of living as well as education system and attitudes toward business). Over 500 CEOs were surveyed regarding states they were familiar with to inform the rankings. According to Chief Executive, “Even allowing for geographic location and weather patterns that are immutable, state economic conditions vary widely. The evidence suggests that pro-growth policies influence perceptions of competitiveness, particularly in the eyes of business leaders.”

The top five states on the 2016 ranking are:

  1. Texas
  2. Florida
  3. North Carolina
  4. Tennessee
  5. Indiana

The bottom five on the 2016 rankings are:

  1. Connecticut
  2. New Jersey
  3. Illinois
  4. New York
  5. California
