Manufacturing Day is Finally Here!

Thursday, October 06, 2016

Manufacturing day (or, in practice, week), where businesses and communities can demonstrate how important manufacturing is to local economies across the nation. Held each year on the first Friday of October, this year Manufacturing Day is October 7th, 2016.

Each year, counties, businesses and local organizations hold events and open houses. Do you have anything going on in your region this year? Let us know, we’d love to report on that great work.

If you’re looking for an event near you, or looking to organize one, visit www.mfgday.com. They’ve also got a great infographic there to illustrate the truth about some common misconceptions about manufacturing in Indiana: http://www.mfgday.com/resources/manufacturing-infographic.

Indiana in particular has a long history of manufacturing excellence, and Manufacturing Day is an important way to keep that tradition going by encouraging and supporting the next generation of workers and entrepreneurs.

If you’ve got an event you’d like to see us report on, let us know via stefan@figmentcreative.com. A few events are listed below, but many more can be found via the map tool on the official www.mfgday.com website.

What Makes Up Our Manufacturing?

Indiana is known for its manufacturing, and especially northern Indiana, which has both history and specialization in that particular industry. Northwest Indiana is world famous for steel manufacturing. North Central Indiana boasts business such as AM General that manufacture the military Humvee vehicles while Elkhart County produces half of the USA’s recreational vehicles. Northeast Indiana similarly is heavily invested in manufacturing, with a large portion of its workforce dedicated to that industry.

But as we celebrate manufacturing day this year though, it’s important to keep in mind that while a few big names or products tend to dominate headlines, manufacturing is far broader than that. To illustrate this point, the Center of Workforce Innovations (CWI), which serves the seven-county northwest Indiana region, recently published an infographic that demonstrates that even though the region has good reason to be known for its steel, the truth is that 60 percent of its manufacturing jobs are producing something else. What else is made there? Follow this link to find out: http://gotoworkonenw.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/NWI-Manufacturing-Infographic-1.pdf
