Manufacturing Day 2016

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Friday, October 7th was Manufacturing Day, a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers.  Manufacturers and community organizations across the county organized events to celebrate manufacturing and focus on the importance of this business sector.  Indiana is home to the highest concentration of manufacturing jobs in the nation.

The Northwest Indiana Forum, Center of Workforce Innovations, NIPSCO, Enbridge and Alcoa celebrated the day by presenting a half-day summit at the Alcoa facility in LaPorte.  The at capacity crowd of 100 business leaders, elected officials, high school and higher education personnel spent the morning actively listening to speakers and panel discussions communicate the common misconceptions about manufacturing, the skilled labor shortage they face and ways to connect with future generations.

Speakers included:  Christine Gooch, Alcoa Plant Manager; Mayor Blair Milo, City of LaPorte; R.D. Parpart, ArcelorMittal; Jon Groth, Porter County Career & Technical Education; Audra Peterson, LaPorte, County Career & Technical Education; Tanima Zaman, Ivy Tech Corporate College; Rudy Labovic, Five Star Engineering; Bill Schott, Urschel; Keith Harpenau, Rockwell Automation; Ron Bush, Ron Bush Consulting; Linda Woloshansky, Center of Workforce Innovations and Heather Ennis, Northwest Indiana Forum.
