NIPSCO Supports FAFSA Completion Competition

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Having an educated pool of workforce candidates supports entrepreneurship, regional growth and attracts investment to an area, so it makes sense to encourage and support students to continue their education beyond high school.

That’s why NIPSCO and the Big Goal Collaborative, an initiative of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, are working together to support regional high school students taking the first step towards continuing their education: filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Three high schools will be selected as winners and a graduating senior from each will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Winning categories include:

  • Greatest Overall Growth – whichever school has the highest growth in FAFSA submissions compared to the year before
  • Growth of 5 percent or more – all schools that experience 5 percent or more growth over the previous year will be part of a drawing for this scholarship
  • Completion rate of 75 percent or more – all schools that have a completion rate of 75 percent or more will be part of a drawing for this scholarship

“To reach the Big Goal, we know we must collaborate to increase educational attainment in the region,” said Dana Berkes, public affairs manager for NIPSCO. “The FAFSA Completion Competition is perfectly aligned with NIPSCO’s 100-year history of supporting the communities we serve. The Big Goal has the potential to increase wages, raise overall economic wealth, meet the needs of existing businesses and create more jobs.”

This government form streamlines the financial aid process and is necessary to qualify for assistance and to reduce student loan burdens, but without submitting the form many students and families don’t realize how achievable college may be.

Other partners are offering free FAFSA assistance workshops for Northeast Indiana residents in Allen and DeKalb counties. Help is available online at and at
