Indiana Reduces Already Low Workers’ Compensation Rates

Thursday, November 30, 2017

A 12.8 percent reduction in Workers’ Compensation rates has been approved by the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI) for 2018, saving Indiana businesses an expected $102 million in the coming year.

“We are proud that Indiana continues to produce some of the lowest Worker’s Compensation rates in the nation,” said IDOI Commissioner Stephen Robertson. “With overall rates decreasing in 2018, Indiana intensifies its tradition of offering employers a welcoming and responsive business environment.” Indiana’s rates are the second lowest in the country, according to the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Premium Rate Ranking. The rates were also reduced last year, by 9.3 percent at that time.

The reason for the decrease is due to dropping frequency of worker injuries which is credited to an increased emphasis on worker safety as well as better case management for injuries. Robertson says savings to businesses from reduced rates will support growth and encourage ongoing job growth.
