Kindling Fires: Idea Week Announced for Northern Indiana

Wednesday, December 20, 2017
Idea WeekA collaborative effort has led to a Northern Indiana festival of ideas and entrepreneurship.

Working together in pursuit of a shared goal of recognizing and supporting the development of their region into a tech hub, the University of Notre Dame, the cities of South Bend and Elkhart and a number of other organizations and businesses have announced that Idea Week will take place April 21-28, 2018.

The lead organization for this is Notre Dame’s IDEA Center. According to the event website, IDEA Week will be a gathering of and for “entrepreneurs, founders, developers, makers, inventors, designers and investors.” Events will be much more than just lectures; Idea Week is being called both a summit and a festival, with concerts, performances, TEDx talks and startup competitions with cash prizes. These events will be held in various locations, and are open to the public.

“The purpose of Idea Week is to accelerate and celebrate the transformation of this region into a technology hub akin to places like Austin, Texas; Provo, Utah; Boulder, Colorado; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Gainesville, Florida,” reports Bryan Ritchie, Notre Dame’s Associate Vice Provost for Innovation.

Idea Week is novel for this area, but not totally new. According to the organizers, other cities have held their own Idea Weeks, finding benefit in supporting the connection of makers, entrepreneurs and investors and highlighting “the economic growth and innovation that is moving the region forward.”
