As phase one of its “Your Energy, Your Future” initiative, which seeks to provide a more affordable and more sustainable energy mix, including being coal-free by 2028, NIPSCO announced three new Indiana-based wind farm projects that will tie into NIPSCO’s electric system.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to add more home-grown renewable energy in Indiana,” said NIPSCO President Violet Sistovaris. “In addition to the economic benefits that projects like these add, the transition we’re making in our electric generation equates to an estimated $4 billion in cost-savings for customers over the long-term.”

Based on NIPSCO’s preferred plan, over the next decade the electric and gas service provider for Northern Indiana will more than double the amount of existing renewable energy in the state. If accomplished, that would put Indiana among the leading renewable energy producers in the nation.

According to the agreements finalized with the experienced developers, the new wind capacity will be in operation by late 2020 and will represent approximately 800 megawatts (MW) of nameplate capacity.

The three projects are:

Jordan Creek - Located in Benton and Warren counties, this project will include an estimated 160 wind turbines with a capacity of 400 MW. The project will be developed and constructed by NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. NIPSCO will purchase power directly from Jordan Creek, who will operate and maintain the facilities.

Roaming Bison – Located in Montgomery County, this project will be developed and constructed by Apex Clean Energy. An estimated 107 turbines will provide a capacity of 300 MW. NIPSCO will purchase power directly from Roaming Bison, who will operate and maintain the facilities.

Rosewater – Located in White County, 25 turbines will provide a capacity of 102 MW. This project will be developed and constructed by EDP Renewables North America LLC. NIPSCO has entered into a joint venture and ownership agreement for the Rosewater project.
