Natural Gas: If you smell gas, think you have a gas leak, have carbon monoxide symptoms or have some other gas emergency situation, go outside and call 911 and thenour emergency number 1-800-634-3524.
Electric: For any electric emergency including a power outage or other electric-related situation, please call 1-800-464-7726. If you see a downed power line, stay away and immediately call 911 and then our emergency number.
Progress continues as nearly 200 crews continue working around the clock to restore service as safely and quickly as possible to each and every remaining impacted customer from the June 11 storms.
To date, approximately 7,000 customers from the June 11 storm remain without power (down from approximately 86,640 total). With over 90% of impacted customers restored, many were able to have power returned sooner than originally projected.
We are also closely monitoring the potential for additional severe weather expected from Tuesday into Wednesday evening. Should this weather impact our service area, it may result in new outages or affect ongoing restoration efforts. Please know that all available crews remain fully committed to continuing restoration work as safely and quickly as possible, even as conditions evolve.
The most recent storm caused damage to more than 295 poles and 15 transmission towers, along with structural impacts to critical infrastructure. Crews are also working to repair downed wires and broken cross arms while managing significant tree and vegetation debris surrounding damaged equipment.
While some outages can be restored relatively quickly, others require more extensive repairs due to the level and complexity of that damage. As this work progresses, timelines may be adjusted to ensure restoration is completed safely and thoroughly. If your original estimate has shifted, please know that our crews remain focused on restoring service to all impacted customers as safely and quickly as possible, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Most important to your safety is to avoid downed power lines, damaged poles or other hazardous situations. Every downed wire should be treated as a live wire, even if you don't see sparks or fire.
Restoration Process
Following an assessment of the damage, NIPSCO’s restoration process begins with repairing large transmission and distribution lines that supply electricity to large numbers of customers in large geographic areas – including critical customers such as hospitals and emergency response. Repairs to other lines that serve smaller groups of customers can’t be made until the larger lines feeding electricity to those areas are repaired.

It’s important you know what to do before, during and after a storm to keep you safe.
Your service line (often referred to as a weatherhead) is part of your home. If it gets damaged, you may have a responsibility to have repairs made.
We accept claims for losses from power outages caused by NIPSCO. However, storms are considered an act of nature, so we do not reimburse customers for damages to property or food spoilage.

Trees are the leading cause of power outages, but cars hitting poles, animals getting into electrical equipment and weather conditions can all have an impact on interruptions to your service.

There are two likely causes. Either your home or business is tied to a different electric circuit/line than your neighbor. Or, there might be a situation only affecting your home/business that requires your attention - such as your circuit breaker or weatherhead.

We are not able to provide priority response to life support/medical equipment members in the restoration process. It’s important that members with special needs make prior arrangements for a back-up power supply. This may mean having a generator or going to a health care facility that has back-up power.

During routine, scheduled tree trimming work, our crews do clean up debris left behind. However, when crews work on damaged trees during storms, they focus on repairs that are critical to restoring power, and do not clean up or remove branches and debris that may be left behind. Contact your local city officials for more information on storm debris disposal.
