Benefits of Recycling Responsibly***
Recycling your old appliances responsibly helps safeguard the environment by using the best available practices to reduce harm to the Earth’s climate and ozone layer. When you participate, you’re making a real impact: you help lower emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases, conserve energy, support the reuse of durable materials and ensure toxic materials are handled safely.
Understanding the Dangers of Ozone Depletion
When the ozone layer is damaged, more harmful UV radiation reaches the Earth’s surface. This overexposure can lead to serious health issues such as skin cancer (including melanoma and non-melanoma), premature aging and other skin conditions, cataracts and other forms of eye damage and suppressed immune system function.
Hazardous Materials in Appliances
Old appliances often contain harmful substances that can pose serious environmental and health risks if not properly handled. Used oil can leak into soil, groundwater and waterways, contaminating drinking water sources. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), found in capacitors, are toxic chemicals regulated by the EPA. PCBs have been linked to liver damage, cancer and harmful effects on children’s neurological development, the reproductive system, immune system and endocrine function. Mercury, found in some thermostatic switches, is a highly toxic element. Exposure can lead to tremors, headaches, respiratory failure, reproductive and developmental disorders and even cancer.
By choosing responsible recycling, you are not only protecting your health and community -you’re helping create a safer, cleaner future for everyone.
