Natural Gas: If you smell gas, think you have a gas leak, have carbon monoxide symptoms or have some other gas emergency situation, go outside and call 911 and thenour emergency number 1-800-634-3524.

Electric: For any electric emergency including a power outage or other electric-related situation, please call  1-800-464-7726. If you see a downed power line, stay away and immediately call 911 and then our emergency number.

Custom Incentive Program

Earn incentives for your efficiency improvements

Upgrade your space and get incentives

The Custom Incentive Program is designed for projects that do not fall under the Prescriptive Incentive Program. Agricultural, large commercial, governmental, industrial, institutional and non-profit customers can earn incentives for improving performance and installing new energy-saving equipment or by optimizing building or industrial systems with retro-commissioning (RCx) processes. Pre-approval is required for all incentives before any equipment is purchased or installed.   

All projects must be completed by November 16, 2025 to be eligible for current 2025 incentives. Projects submitted after this date are subject to 2026 incentives and requirements. 

Incentives are calculated based on how much you’ll save in kilowatt hours (kWh) and/or therms.

  • $0.01/kWh saved for RCx Study*
  • $0.10/kWh saved for reduced lighting projects
  • $0.15/kWh saved for electric non-lighting projects
  • $1.00/therm saved for natural gas projects

*RCx Study incentives will be provided to the TRC approved RCx provider and capped at the RCx study cost. RCx study incentives will be paid after the installation of RCx electric measures.

What type of projects qualify?

Eligible projects may consist of the retrofit or replacement of existing equipment/systems that result in energy savings through incentives. This can include, but is not limited to, agriculture, lighting, HVAC, compressed air, refrigeration, food service, motors, data centers and IT system projects. Retro-commissioning projects may also qualify for incentives through this program. 

Retro-Commissioning is the systematic process by which building systems or industrial systems are optimized to meet existing operational needs. The RCx incentive is designed to help qualified NIPSCO Commercial & Industrial (C&I) customers determine the energy performance of their facilities and identify energy-saving opportunities by optimizing their existing systems. How to Apply

Step 1 – Review and complete the incentive application

Program Excel Application

Need help completing the Excel Application?  Watch this tutorial* for step-by-step instructions. 

Step 2 – Submit application with supporting documents

Email the completed application and supporting documents to NIPSCO.Savings@TRCcompanies.com. Supporting documentation required:

  • Product specifications of efficient equipment
  • Tax exempt letter (if applicable)
  • Energy savings calculations (for non-lighting projects)

Step 3 – Application review

Applications are reviewed in the order that they are received. Complete applications are processed for review within three (3) business days of submission.

Step 4 – Project approved, incentive offer delivered

Incentive Offer must be signed and returned within 30 days of being issued.

Step 5 – Customer signs and returns incentive offer, begins project

Once the incentive offer is signed and returned, the customer is free to purchase and install the energy efficient equipment.

Step 6 – Delivery of completion form

Completion forms will be sent out approximately 1-2 weeks prior to the estimated completion date.

Step 7 – Project installed, customer signs and returns completion form

Customer must submit final invoices along with signed completion form noting any changes to the scope of work.

Step 8 – Final review of project

Incentives are subject to change based on the final scope of work.

Step 9 – Receive incentive payment

Incentive checks typically arrive within 6-8 weeks.

Who qualifies?

Eligible customers include those currently billed under NIPSCO electric rates 520, 521, 522, 523, 524, 525, 526, 531 Tier 1, 532, 533, 541, 543 or 544 and natural gas rates 321, 325 or 351 (NIPSCO’s DependaBill rate). 

Customers participating in the Midstream Channel by purchasing qualifying equipment from a participating dealer, are not eligible to participate in the Prescriptive/Custom Program or any other NIPSCO program for an incentive on the same piece of purchased equipment.
