How will I know if my service will be remotely disconnected?

Does this mean NIPSCO can shutoff my service whenever they want?
No. NIPSCO will only remotely shut off your electric service if you request to stop service, during an emergency like a fire or flood event, or in the case of nonpayment. In the case of nonpayment, you will be notified via phone, text or email. To ensure your contact information is up to date, please follow the prompts on this page.

Why is NIPSCO making this change in the electric connection and disconnection process?
NIPSCO is always looking for ways to enhance safety and reliability of our service to you, and we are upgrading the way we read and service electric meters through the installation of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, system. AMI enables NIPSCO to improve service to our customers and operate more safely and efficiently. The ability to remotely connect or disconnect customers with the AMI technology allows us to get you connected or disconnected faster. NIPSCO will have the ability to complete a same-day turn-on or connection without having to schedule a NIPSCO crew member to come to your home or business. Remote functionality also allows us to respond fast in an emergency situation with an immediate emergency disconnect. In instances where service must be disconnected due to non-payment, this will also be done remotely
