Public charging

Charging your EV at a public charging station while you're at work or shopping is a great way to make the most of your time while your EV charges.

Home charging

Charging your EV at home overnight is where most charging happens and is normally cheaper than public charging. Home chargers may be a bit slower compared to a public fast charger depending on your type of equipment.

NIPSCO EV charging station frequently asked questions

If a NIPSCO charger is not working properly, what should I do?

If you arrive at an EV charging station and one of the dispensers is not working properly, please call the number shown at the charging station. For the NIPSCO EV charging stations, please call Shell Recharge at 1-888-GO-SHELL (1-888-467-4355).

Thank you for your response.

Can two vehicles use the same dispenser simultaneously and charge?

It depends. If the dispenser is set up for multiple cars to charge simultaneously, it will split the amount to each car, doubling the time to charge. However, if it is not, the two vehicles will share power from the charging station, which increases the time required to reach full charge. As one vehicle reaches full charge, the second dispenser will resume charging at full power.

Thank you for your response.

What is the cost to charge at a NIPSCO charging station?

NIPSCO’s current tariff rates for charge per kWh can be found at https://www.nipsco.com/our-company/about-us/regulatory-information/electric-rates under Rate 549.

Once a charging session is complete, drivers are allowed a 10-minute grace period to unplug and leave the charging station. After this a $1/min idling fee is enforced to encourage drivers to move their charged vehicle quickly, allowing other drivers to utilize the charging station.

Thank you for your response.

How can I pay for charging at the NIPSCO EV Charging locations?

You can use the Shell Mobile App (Shell Recharge) for payment on your smartphone. Simply scan the QR code located on the front of the EV Charger with your smart phone and easily pay for your charging session from the mobile app. To initiate a charge over the phone instead, call Shell at 1-888-GO-SHELL (1-888-467-4355) and provide your payment information. Additional payment options are also available on the charging stations.

Thank you for your response.

Is there a mobile app for payment when using NIPSCO chargers?

NIPSCO’s charging stations are linked to the Shell Recharge mobile app (previously Greenlots) for payment and more. You can download the app on the App Store here or Google Play here, or you scan the QR code displayed at each station. Additional payment options are also available on the charging stations. Charging payments cannot be made through the NIPSCO mobile app.

Thank you for your response.

Do I need a certain type of plug or connector to charge my car at a NIPSCO fast-charging station?

Yes, you will need a specific type of plug or connector to charge your electric vehicle (EV) at NIPSCO fast-charging stations. Our fast-charging stations typically utilize connectors compatible with the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard. This standard is widely used by EV manufacturers and ensures compatibility with a wide range of electric vehicles.

If you have an adaptor or your EV is equipped with a CCS-compatible port, you can easily charge it at our fast-charging stations. Always refer to your owner’s manual for information on how to properly charge your vehicle.

Thank you for your response.

How fast can a NIPSCO fast-charging station charge my vehicle?

An estimated charging time will be displayed at the charging station when you plug in your vehicle. NIPSCO fast-charging stations operate at a 150-kilowatt (kW) capacity rating, which can generally provide 80-100 miles of driving range in approximately 20-25 minutes. The charging speed of an EV fast-charging station varies by vehicle, battery capacity, and the amount of your remaining battery charge.

Thank you for your response.

EV charging frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to charge at home or on the road?

Generally, charging at home is cheaper than charging on the road. The cost of home charging depends on your local electricity rates and the efficiency of your EV charger. On the other hand, charging on the road may involve using public charging stations, which might have higher charging fees or require membership subscriptions. Additionally, some charging networks offer free charging as incentives. However, factoring in convenience and time, charging at home often proves to be more cost-effective for most EV owners.

Thank you for your response.

Do I need a certain type of plug or connector to charge my car?

Yes, the plug or connector required to charge your car depends on the type of charger your vehicle supports. There are different types of plugs and connectors for each charger level, and you should always refer to your owner’s manual for information on how to properly charge your vehicle. Different types of plugs or connectors may include:

Level 1 Chargers: Typically come with a standard three-prong household plug (NEMA 5-15).

Level 2 Chargers: Use a variety of connectors, including J1772 in North America and Type 2 in Europe.

DC Fast Chargers (Level 3 Chargers): Use connectors such as CHAdeMO, CCS (Combo), or NACS (Tesla) connector, depending on the vehicle make and model.

Thank you for your response.

Was this helpful?

What are the different types of chargers?

There are primarily three types of chargers for electric vehicles (EVs):

Level 1 Chargers: These chargers use a standard 120-volt household outlet and provide the slowest charging rate. They are typically included with EV purchases and are suitable for overnight charging at home.

Level 2 Chargers: These chargers require a 240-volt power source and provide faster charging compared to Level 1 chargers. They are commonly found in residential settings, workplaces, and public charging stations.

DC Fast Chargers (Level 3 Chargers): These chargers provide the fastest charging rates and are typically found at public charging stations along highways or in urban areas. They use direct current (DC) power and can charge an EV to 80% capacity in as little as 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle.

Refer to your owner’s manual for information to determine which charger is right for your vehicle.

Thank you for your response.

Was this helpful?

Is fast-charging harmful to my EV's battery?

Different electric vehicles have different charging capabilities. Always refer to your owner’s manual for information on how to properly charge your vehicle.

Thank you for your response.

Was this helpful?

What's the difference between AC charging and DC fast charging?

A typical DC fast-charging station allows direct power transfer and can deliver 80-100 miles of driving range in approximately 20-25 minutes. An AC charging station (commonly used at home or in public charging stations with lower power outputs) will typically take 3-4 hours to reach the same charge. Always refer to your owner’s manual for information on how to properly charge your vehicle.

Thank you for your response.
