About gas AMI and advanced metering
The installation of gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, systems enable us to improve service to you. The NIPSCO gas AMI system will be installed in phases for approximately 870,000 gas customers throughout NIPSCO’s service area over the next several years.

Your gas AMI module installation
The process to get your new AMI module installed is simple:
- When it is time for you to get your gas module installed, you will be notified via a letter in the mail approximately 30 days in advance of the installation.
- Modules will be installed by Quanta Utility Engineering Services (QUES), a NIPSCO subcontractor. The technicians will carry photo identification, wear uniforms and drive marked vehicles.
- The installation process will be done at no charge and will take approximately 15 minutes to install the equipment. On the day of installation, a service technician will come to your home or business to change out the equipment. The technician will knock on your door to check if you are home, but you do not need to be home for the exchange to take place. In most cases, the technician will not need to enter customer homes or businesses. However, the technician will request access if the meter is located inside or behind a locked gate. The technician will leave a door hanger with information about your new module when the job is done.
- If you are not at home during the visit, the technician will leave a door hanger indicating that the new module was installed or informing the customer how to schedule an installation appointment if QUES was unable to access the meter.
Your gas AMI meter exchange (if needed)
- In some cases, further work may be needed on your meter for the AMI module to be installed. If that is the case, your meter will be exchanged with a new gas meter that seamlessly integrates with the AMI system. You will be notified via a letter in the mail at least 14 days in advance of the installation. Rest assured your meter will continue to operate safely while you await your meter exchange.
- Meter exchanges will be completed by InfraSource Construction LLC (IFS), a NIPSCO subcontractor. The technicians will carry photo identification, wear uniforms and drive marked vehicles.
- The installation process will be done at no charge. To complete this work, your gas service will be temporarily interrupted, and the InfraSource technician will need to enter your home to perform a relight (restoring gas to at least one appliance). This work will require us to shut off the gas service while the meter is being exchanged and the appliance is relit.
- If you are not at home during the visit, the meter will be exchanged and gas service will be temporarily interrupted. The technician will leave a door hanger that will inform you how to schedule an appointment for your gas-based appliance relight.
Please note: customers whose meters require immediate maintenance will not receive a letter notification but will receive a door knock and door hanger with installation details and contact information. If temporary shut-off is required, customers will receive fourteen (14) days written notice unless the situation poses a hazard or danger.

FAQs - Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Overview
Who is doing the equipment change?
Thank you for your response.
What is Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)?
Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, is a technology that allows NIPSCO to read your utility meter remotely without having to send a person or vehicle to read the meter at your home or business in person. With AMI, also known as smart metering, your meter reads are remotely transmitted back to NIPSCO using network technology.
Thank you for your response.
Why is NIPSCO installing Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)?
There are many benefits to utilizing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). By having a Gas AMI communications module installed, NIPSCO can provide customers with more frequent and enhanced usage data, which will help us to better address your questions if you have any issues with your service. Immediate and future benefits may include:
Greater visibility into gas consumption and access to on-demand meter reading
Reduced carbon footprint from fewer vehicle emissions by eliminating the need to drive by for a billing read
Improved safety for NIPSCO employees by reducing in-person field visits for gas meter reading
Improved customer service by increasing frequency of meter readings
Please note that some benefits and AMI functionality may not be available until future years

FAQs - Gas Meter Reading and Meter Safety
Are the radiofrequency (RF) waves produced by the new equipment harmful to my health?
Thank you for your response.
Will I have access to my meter data?
Yes. As the AMI technology system is deployed in the coming years, you will have access to more detailed information about your gas usage patterns through the NIPSCO web self-service portal and mobile app. Additional information and features will be added as we continuously improve the system. These features will enable you to have a better understanding of your energy usage so you can make better choices about how you use your energy.
Thank you for your response.
Has this new AMI equipment been tested for accuracy and reliability?
Yes, AMI modules come pre-tested along with test results directly from the manufacturer. The module will be tested for accuracy during the deployment process.
Thank you for your response.
Will the AMI impact my computer, home security system, or other electronic equipment?
