Restoration efforts following this week’s severe weather are nearing completion. Approximately 40 crews continue to work to restore service as safely and quickly as possible to each and every remaining impacted customer from the most recent storms.
Currently, around 1,250 customers remain without power (down from a peak of approximately 23,600 total).
We recognize the disruption an extended outage can cause and sincerely thank our customers for their patience and understanding throughout this restoration effort. As final repairs are completed, we encourage customers to continue taking appropriate steps to keep themselves and their families safe.
The most recent storm caused damage to 80 distribution poles as well as structural damage to critical infrastructure. Crews have also been working to repair numerous downed wires and broken crossarms while managing significant tree and vegetation debris around damaged equipment.
The remaining communities most impacted include Gary, Griffith and Hammond.
ESTIMATED TIMES OF RESTORATION BY COMMUNITY
(IMPORTANT NOTE: The estimates below reflect when NIPSCO expects a majority of remaining customers in these communities to be restored based on current information. As repairs are completed, customers will be restored in phases throughout the restoration effort, so some customers may have power back sooner than the listed times. These estimates represent when the final customers are expected to be restored, with some individual cases potentially extending beyond.)
Our customer service representatives do not have additional details beyond what is posted publicly. We encourage customers to check NIPSCO.com/outages for the most current information.
We understand that losing power is disruptive, and we appreciate your patience. Safety drives every step of restoration, and while that may require temporary outages for some customers, it allows crews to complete repairs correctly and restore service as efficiently as possible.
As crews continue restoration work, they have identified significant damage to power poles and extensive tree damage in areas where power lines run through neighborhoods and behind properties.
This type of damage requires additional time to safely clear debris, replace or repair poles, and ensure equipment is stable before power can be restored. Because of this, estimated restoration times for some customers are being extended.
While we understand this may be frustrating, these steps are necessary to protect our crews, prevent further damage, and ensure power is restored safely and reliably.
NIPSCO tracks developing weather patterns and prepares crews accordingly to respond to anticipated severe weather. We understand that any interruption in service is inconvenient, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work as safely and quickly as possible to assess damage and make necessary repairs.
WHY OUTAGE NUMBERS CAN CHANGE
As crews work to restore power, customers may see outage numbers temporarily increase.
This can happen when:
Damage is more extensive than initially visible
Crews must isolate sections of the grid to safely make repairs
Additional issues are identified during restoration work
While this may extend restoration time for some customers, these steps are critical to ensure repairs are completed safely and prevent recurring outages.
Please Report Your Outage
If you are experiencing a power outage, please text "out" to 444111 to report an outage, visit nipsco.com/outages or on the NIPSCO app, available on the Apple App Store or on Google Play.
Safety First – Stay Away from Downed Power Lines
Most important to your safety is to avoid downed power lines, damaged poles or other hazardous situations. Every downed wire should be treated as though it is a live wire.
Restoration Process
Following an assessment of the damage, NIPSCO’s restoration process begins with repairing large transmission and distribution lines that supply electricity to large numbers of customers in large geographic areas – including critical customers such as hospitals and emergency response. Repairs to other lines that serve smaller groups of customers can’t be made until the larger lines feeding electricity to those areas are repaired.

It’s important you know what to do before, during and after a storm to keep you safe.
Your service line (often referred to as a weatherhead) is part of your home. If it gets damaged, you may have a responsibility to have repairs made.
We accept claims for losses from power outages caused by NIPSCO. However, storms are considered an act of nature, so we do not reimburse customers for damages to property or food spoilage.
Thank you for your response.
Trees are the leading cause of power outages, but cars hitting poles, animals getting into electrical equipment and weather conditions can all have an impact on interruptions to your service.
Thank you for your response.
There are two likely causes. Either your home or business is tied to a different electric circuit/line than your neighbor. Or, there might be a situation only affecting your home/business that requires your attention - such as your circuit breaker or weatherhead.
Thank you for your response.
We are not able to provide priority response to life support/medical equipment members in the restoration process. It’s important that members with special needs make prior arrangements for a back-up power supply. This may mean having a generator or going to a health care facility that has back-up power.
Thank you for your response.
During routine, scheduled tree trimming work, our crews do clean up debris left behind. However, when crews work on damaged trees during storms, they focus on repairs that are critical to restoring power, and do not clean up or remove branches and debris that may be left behind. Contact your local city officials for more information on storm debris disposal.
Thank you for your response.
