What are natural gas detectors?
You’ve heard of smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, but did you know there’s a detector for natural gas? It monitors for natural gas (methane) and can identify
a potential leak. If the alarm does go off, or if you smell a sulfur or rotten-egg-like odor, you could have a gas leak and must STOP what you are doing, LEAVE the area immediately and CALL 911 and NIPSCO at 1-800-634-3524 (24/7).
Natural gas detectors are available for purchase at most home improvement
stores and come with various features. Here are some to keep in mind:
- A natural gas detector can alert you, much like a smoke or CO detector, with an audible or visual alarm. Some even have voice alerts and Smart Home features.
- There are plug-in and battery-operated natural gas detectors to fit your home or business needs.
- Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions to ensure proper operation. Trust your senses to LISTEN, SMELL and LOOK to detect leaks too.
