Natural Gas: If you smell gas, think you have a gas leak, have carbon monoxide symptoms or have some other gas emergency situation, go outside and call 911 and thenour emergency number 1-800-634-3524.

Electric: For any electric emergency including a power outage or other electric-related situation, please call  1-800-464-7726. If you see a downed power line, stay away and immediately call 911 and then our emergency number.

When It Matters Most: Restoring Power and Keeping You Informed

When It Matters Most

Severe storms moved through Northwest Indiana, causing widespread damage and leaving tens of thousands without power. For many, this goes beyond an outage. It disrupts homes, businesses and daily life. 

Severe weather is not new to Northern Indiana, but recent rounds of storms have brought high winds, heavy rain and reports of tornado activity across the region. Events like this can cause widespread damage and make restoration more complex. 

When storms hit like this, we’re focused on restoring power and keeping people informed. 

What we’re seeing across Northern Indiana 

Crews are working across the region, assessing damage and starting repairs. We’re seeing: 

  • Downed lines
  • Broken poles
  • Damage across the system 

In many areas, crews must secure the site and clear hazards before repairs can begin. Conditions are still changing. Safety comes first. 

What it takes to restore power 

  • Assess damage
  • Clear hazards
  • Repair major infrastructure that serves multiple communities 

That work brings the most customers back online first. After that, crews move into neighborhoods and restore power locally. A lot of work has to happen before it reaches your street. 

What this means for you 

If your power is still out, crews may be working on other parts of the system first. That includes the parts that need to be fixed before your area can be restored. Much of this is not visible, but it directly affects when your service comes back. 

What to expect next 

Restoration depends on the extent of damage, access and the order repairs need to happen. Some areas will come back quickly. Others, especially where damage is more severe, may take longer. We’re still assessing damage and will keep sharing updates as we learn more.

When it matters most, people need two things: power back on and clear information. Crews are working across the region to restore service as safely and quickly as possible. We’ll keep you informed as work continues.

  • Stay at least 50 feet away from downed lines. 
  • Treat all lines as energized
  • Report outages through official channels
