IN-POWER Youth Mentoring
Mentoring is a powerful tool in strengthening the local workforce, which is why NIPSCO is partnering with local schools to bring hands-on training, job shadowing and scholarships to area high schools.
Ninth grade students from Northwest Indiana schools are invited to participate in IN-POWER Youth Mentoring, a four-year program which pairs the students with NIPSCO employees.
Throughout their four years, IN-POWER mentees gather experiences which will help prepare them for college, careers and community citizenship, including:
- Job shadowing across several of our departments, from electrical engineering and communications to plant operations and customer service
- Earning college credits in general core classes from local universities
- Receiving college and career coaching from the Urban League of NWI, Center for Mentors and Gary Life Education Initiative, Inc.
Upon completing the program and their first semester of college, students can take the next step in career exploration by applying for a summer internship with NIPSCO.
As the IN-POWER Youth Mentoring program continues to grow and expand its reach, our goal is to help our mentees feel confident and positive about their futures and the future of their community.
The IN-POWER Youth Mentoring Program is conducted in partnership with Calumet College of St. Joseph, Urban League of Northwest Indiana, Gary Life Education Initiative, Inc., Merrillville High School and Lew Wallace High School.
